The Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria have resolved to work together to storm construction sites to inspect the standard of building materials and compliance with building codes across the country.
Speaking at a workshop organised by the NSE and SON, with the theme, ‘Mobile Storage Vessels and Photovoltaic Standards’ in Abuja, the President, NSE, Otis Anyaeji, explained that codes and guidelines were the technical standards for promoting safety, reliability and efficiency in engineering.
He said, “Our International Engineering Conference and Annual General Meeting, which held in 2010, recognised that the development of relevant codes and standards is a complex and dynamic process. It pointed out the need for allied professional and regulatory bodies to join the NSE as a matter of urgency in the development and implementation of sustainable codes and standards.
“Codes and standards are the technical guidelines for promoting safety, reliability, productivity and efficiency in engineering work. We shall continue to encourage our institutions to make the development of codes and standards the foundation of their professional work.
“As pacesetters, we must sustain this kind of engagements and also continually monitor policies and programmes affecting critical sectors of the nation’s economy for the purpose of engineering input and liaising with relevant stakeholders from the public and private sectors to ensure coordinated action for our country’s sustainable development.
Both organisations vowed to ensure the effective implementation of codes and standards in the engineering profession considering its benefits to the general public
